This is a 20 episode drama starring Damian Lau as General Choi Ock and Kathy Chow as the popular prostitute Siu Fung Sin.

Other supporting cast are Kenneth Ma as Damian army student and Toby as the long lost daughter of the top adviser to the President.

The drama started with Siu Fung Sin listening to a story teller talking about her love story with General Choi.

Fung Sin is in her old age in that opening scene and viewer get the impression that she is looking back and thinking about the past.

Then there was a petal from a blossom tree which took viewers to the past and introducing Genral Choi.

The petal from the blossom tree seemed insignificant in the beginning but as the drama continues, it signifies a deep meaning between Fung Sin and General Choi. It was the one request from Fung Sin to General that he takes her to see the blossom trees which he did not managed to fufill.

The General was summoned by the President to Peking and he took the decision to go despite knowing that it is a very dangerous move because the President is a selfish person who is only thinking about his own gains but not that of the people.

His troops in Wunan is against the general going to Peking and tried to stop him.

The General made a powerful speech about why he is going and rationale behind his decision.

He told the troops that they should remain in Wunan as his backup.

When the general reaches Peking, he is faced with difficulties since he is considered a threat by those in Peking and by the President.

He chanced upon Siu Fung Sin and on a few occassions used her to stabilise his own position and gain the trust of others.

The realtionship between Fung Sin and Choi Ock was hostile in the beginning.

He started developing a respect for Fung and started treating her like a friend when he found out that she is into prostitution for the sake of her family.

She developed a liking for Choi Ock after witnessing how he faught to save the country from the Japanese and when he did not succeed because of the selfish motives of the President, she started falling for him.

Choi Ock did not pay any attention to her because he is married and did not want to have any extra marital affairs.

She persued him but he pushed her off. He did however try to help her through her brother.

When the President refused to declare war against the Japanese, Choi Ock decided to go against him but the President had his family as hostage.

In his bid to save them and send them back to Wunan, Choi Ock pretend that he has fallen in love with Fung Sin and divorced his wife.

The President and his advisor did not believe the ploy and continued to watch Choi Ock's every move.

Finally Choi succeded in sending his family away from Peking but by then Fung Sin came to know that he is using her to save his family.

She was very hurt but was also so deeply in love with him that she continued to help him.

As a consequence, all her friend deserted her. Choi Ock knows that she had suffered greatly for him. Choi Ock developed a lot of care and feelings for Fung Sin but he continued to suppress his love for her.

When he finally decided to leave Peking, they could not bear to leave each other.

As fate would have it, they ended up on the run together and Fung Sin nearly died of her injuries.

Choi Ock was carrying her and running for their lives because he refused to leave her alone.

When she recovered, he confesses his love for her and they spent some memorable days together.

Finally, Fung Sin decided that if she continues to stay with Choi Ock, she will only slow down his attempt to escape and after getting married in a small house and spending some time together she made ultimate sacrifice of surrending herself so that he can continue to run to save the all the Chinese people.

She wrote a very heartfelt letter to him and left him to rattan ring which he made for her for the wedding.

Despite being heart broken he ran because he did not want to disappoint her sacrifice.

Choi Ock reached Wunan and Fung Sin was captured. Choi Ock finally managed to fight against the President and restored stability in China.

The war ended with victory for Choi and the chinese people and the death of President Yuen. Fung Sin was let out of jail and lived her friend from her earlier days. One day she got a letter from Choi Ock wife and she went to see him in Japan.

He is critically ill by that time but had confessed his love for Fung Sin to his wife before he went to war after he returned from Peking. Choi Ock died and his last thoughts were of the blossom garden with Fung Sin. The drama ended with information about where Choi was buried.

An excellent drama with excellent leading cast

I'll like to paste some comments I saw from other blogs/ webpages, so that we can share the response of more audiences. P/S: none of these are mine :)

Although I tend to be a big fan of period dramas, I don’t know if I want to watch this one anymore. I associate the dramas in this pre-modern era and the Qing era as their costumes are quite similar (in a way, the chipaos were inspired by the Qing style) and I’m very tired of watching the Qing era now. After Sweetness in the Salt and then Rosy Business a couple months later, I noticed that I didn’t enjoy the latter as much as I thought I would. Personally, I feel that Rosy has an well-written script (though a bit too much drama at times) and excellent bunch of actors/actresses, but the series still fails to leave an impression on me. I still believe today the reason Rosy isn’t on my list of favorites is due to the era its set in. Furthermore, because both series revolves around a family and the good (trying to maintain the salt/rice business) fighting the evil (trying to usurp the salt/rice business), the storyline is all too predictable.

Instead of watching this series while on air, I’ll probably wait for the reviews to determine whether or not I should see it. While Damian and Kathy are great actors/actresses, I won’t watch a series for them, but more for the plot. Kenneth is a good actor, but together with Toby, he seems a bit weak. Obviously, Kathy is years older than Kenneth and the two doesn’t look too compatible together. However, Damian’s character does seem to interest me as he will be “fooling around with the highly sought-after courtesan” to “avoid detection”. I hope his character is witty like in Catch Me Now and not stubborn about his work. Perhaps, I’ll watch, but without expectations.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I’m actually the opposite and actually tend to skip period dramas ( I find period dramas quite boring and depressing) but I gave this one a go because of Damien, Kathy and Kenneth as well as the fact that there was nothing better to watch…

but WOW was I surprised as to how hooked I am to this drama and to the time period!!! watching this series really raises your head about China’s history as well as being passionate to be Chinese when you had people like Choi Ngok going against all odds to do the best he can to stablize an already crumbling China… I am halfway through this series and I feel like I am watching history unfold rather than watching actors (apart from the Toby side) …

Damien never misses a beat, and he has made me feel on the edge of my seat everytime he delivers his lines and I crumble like he does when all fails… Kathy is beautiful and her tears just fall so naturally…

gosh, a surprise favourite for me, and the themesong is just soooo fitting for this series!!

I say, give this series a try, you will learn something!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

sandalls – Thanks for letting me know! I don’t have too much time one my hands these days to watch the series with classes and work, but I’ll try to make time for the series. In the past, I’ve been the biggest fan of period dramas, but didn’t like comedies until I’ve came upon War or In-Laws II, You’re Hired, and D.I.E. Again. I love lighthearted dramas these days because it’s a good stress reliever! Damian, Kathy, and Kenneth are great actors and actress, but generally, I would not watch a series for them unless it has a solid storyline.

Haha, the way you put it makes me want to give this series a try. I told myself to watch this series later so that I won’t give the feeling Rosy Business gave me after watching Sweetness in the Salt. Both were set during the Qing and the plot got a bit tedious and repetitive for me. Since the Qing and the pre-modern era is so close, I’ll maybe watch the series at the end of the year, maybe during winter vacation. :)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I actually would recommend this series. Something about is so captivating that I had to keep watching and watching all the way until the very end. But I do not regret it one bit because it was a greatttttt series. Damien is amazing at acting like always. He makes you feel his passion for China. Kathy is perceived as such a strong woman, yet also is able to show her weaker side…and I do agree that her tears fall so naturally. You just have to cry with her and feel her pain. I just finished the series today. And I loved it.

I just finished this series and I enjoyed it very much.  I thought that everyone did an awesome job, especially Damian because his speeches made me felt like I need to join the army to protect my country.  This series deserves better ratings.
